Introduction: John Fladhammer, Civil War expert and lecturer at the Amerikazentrum
The young lawyer, Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), is convinced by his mentor, the former attorney general, to defend Mary Surrat (Robin Wright). The widowed Southerner is accused of aiding and abetting President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin by providing him shelter in her guest house. Despite calls for revenge by the American people, Frederick’s admiration for the secretive woman grows as the trial progresses. But is Mary an innocent victim? Does she only want to protect her son, who is still on the run? Or is she a skilled liar and cold-blooded conspirator?
The Oscar-winning director Robert Redford directs this explosive drama with a star-studded cast including James McAvoy and Tom Wilkinson.
